Spend a relaxing day on the island of Noirmoutier

I could talk on and on about the beautiful region of Vendée in France. This is where I come from, my homeland, my roots, my family. It is located on the Atlantic coast, and is not very famous by its name. Everyone who visits there, always told me they spent unforgettable holidays. The traditions in Vendée are ancient, with a lot of history behind each city and places to discover, and today, I will tell you more about the Island of Noirmoutier, a haven of peace.

Grab a French breakfast and watch the tide and sun- rise at the Passage du Gois

A croissant or pain au chocolat from a bakery with a hot beverage is the best way to wait for the sunrise at the Passage du Gois. But the sun is not the only thing that you can watch rising at this exceptional place: the Atlantic ocean tide will offer you a unique moment to share breakfast.

But what is this Passage? It is a natural causeway between Beauvoir-sur-Mer and the island. It is around 4km long and is flooded twice a day by the high tide. You can pass by car or bicycle, because a road runs along the causeway. And if you are really motivated: take time to do some fishing! Many locals and tourists dig and search the silty soil when the ocean is far away for clams and some types of seafood. Wonderful moment to spend but be careful to go back to your car on time, the ocean is fast! The tide phenomenon due to the moon often surprises the people visiting that famous place and some even get stuck in the water. It can be very dangerous so it is important to respect the safety rules over there.

Visit la Guérinière in the early morning

La Guérinière is one municipality of the island, and in the early morning it will be a very quiet and relaxing moment for you to discover the 23 mills (some built during the VII century!) that were using the force and movement of the tides as a source of energy. Also, take the time to walk around the Oyster port “du Bonhomme” which is a miniature farm, with only 500m that separate it from the ocean. From there, you can also have a good view from the centre of the island: Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile, which is our next stopover.

Visit the market in Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile and enjoy an excellent seafood restaurant for lunch

The market of Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile takes place every Tuesday, Friday and Sunday in the mornings. Here you can find everything, from goodies, scarves, to tasty foods and drinks. You can start the apéritif by trying out what the merchants have to offer. Afterwards, you can find many restaurants within the narrow streets and places steeped in history. Of course, seafood and fish is recommended because 100% fresh and the cooking recipes are passed down from one generation to the next.

Digestion over a bike ride: from the salt marshes of Noirmoutier-en-l’Ile to the Bois de la Chaise

The salt marshes cover 1/3 of the island and are a must-see since they have been shaped by man over the centuries. These salt workers keep perpetuating an ancestral know-how to produce a 100% natural salt harvested by hand. You can visit the marshes and even buy the precious “fleur de sel” over there. So, take the time to ride your bike over there. After that you can take the direction of the “Bois de la Chaise”. It is located in the North-East of the island with a nice vegetation (oaks, pines…), amazing sandy beaches and coves where you will be able to take a good nap and swim in the cold ocean. It is a perfect place to recharge batteries.

Enjoy the sunset and a good dinner at the north of the island: “L’Herbaudière”

The fishing port of L’Herbaudière is beautiful and quiet. You can ramble around the souvenir stores, bars with a view on small and colourful boats. It was the first marina built in Vendée, a historic place that you have to visit. You can also find excellent restaurants to have dinner while watching the sunset in a cosy atmosphere.

And that’s it on how to spend a whole day on the beautiful French Island of Noimoutier. However, if you want to stay longer, there are much more things that the isle offers, more beaches to explore, museums, aquatic parks. A dream for the holidays. But hopefully now you have an excellent overview of what type of vacations you can have in Vendée.
